What Is Coaching &
Would It Help Me?
Coaching is often misunderstood as simply a way to solve problems. While problem-solving is certainly an outcome, coaching is far more than that. It’s a powerful process that fosters greater self-awareness, shifts in perspective, and an expanded ability to perform beyond the immediate challenge. Dr. Robert Biswas-Diener, a pioneer in applying positive psychology to coaching, describes it well: “Coaching can become, in some ways, a ‘psychological time-out from problems.’ When the focus shifts to improving circumstances or skills, the emphasis extends over a longer timeline. Coaching highlights your strengths, encourages experimentation, and transforms challenges into learning opportunities rather than obstacles.” At its core, coaching is about learning and growth, not just goal achievement. It’s an experiential process and one that allows you to apply insights in real time, refine your approach through feedback, and develop lasting change in how you think, lead, and perform.
A New Vision For Leadership
What comes to mind when you think of “leadership”. Training, development and educational systems focus on learning about things. We learn what to think, not how to be. We learn what to achieve, not how to achieve.
Leadership is not hierarchical. It potentially exists everywhere in organizations. The “roles” of leadership change, but the core process is the same. Anyone who is courageously and authentically influencing to create enduring value is leading. Deep from their core, leaders courageously bring forward their talents and connect and serve multiple people and groups.
Leadership isn’t a destination; it’s a practice. This is deep, transformational work that creates not just better leaders, but better workplaces, organizations, and communities.
